چکیده

Nuclear fission has been used as a reliable source for utility power in the United States for decades. Even in the 1940’s, long before the United States had a viable space program, the theoretical benefits of nuclear power as applied to space travel were being explored [Humble, et. al.]. These benefits include long-life operation and high performance, particularly in the form of vehicle power density, enabling longerlasting space missions. The configurations for nuclear rocket systems and chemical rocket systems are similar except that a nuclear rocket utilizes a fission reactor as its heat source. This thermal energy can be utilized directly to

REIMR - A Process for Utilizing Liquid Rocket Propulsion- Oriented ‘Lessons Learned’ to Mitigate Development Risk in Nuclear Thermal Propulsion

This paper is a summary overview of a study conducted at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (NASAMSFC) during the initial phases of the Space Launch Initiative (SLI) program to evaluate a large number of technical problems associated with the design, development, test, evaluation and operation of several major liquid propellant rocket engine systems (i.e., SSME, Fastrac, J-2, F-I). One of th...

NUCLEAR THERMAL ROCKET/VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS AND SENSITIVITY TRADES FOR NASA’s MARS DESIGN REFERENCE ARCHITECTURE (DRA) 5.0 STUDY

This paper summarizes Phase I and II analysis results from NASA’s recent Mars DRA 5.0 study which re-examined mission, payload and transportation system requirements for a human Mars landing mission in the post-2030 timeframe. Nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) propulsion was again identified as the preferred in-space transportation system over chemical/aerobrake because of its higher specific impuls...

AlAA 93-1813 A Compact Gas Core Nuclear Rocket for Space Exploration

The open cycle Gas Core Nuclear Rocket (GCR) possesses, in principle, outstanding propulsion characteristics that make it especially attractive for advanced space propulsion. With uranium as fuel and hydrogen as propellant, it can generate several thousand seconds of specific impulse and hundreds of kilonewtons of thrust. In its standard configuration, however, GCR is susceptible to hydrodynami...

On the Dust-curtain Model Gaseous-core Reactor for Space of a Radiation Shield in A

The interest in interplanetary space travel has stimulated much discussion on the desirability of using nuclear, rather than chemical, energy for the spacecraft propulsion. Comparisons of the relative merits of various propulsion systems have been extensively discussed in the literature. The results of such studies yield a diversity of conclusions, depending on the assumptions which are made in...
